New NFL Rule Changes

Today the owners of the NFL voted on some new rules. Some were passed. Some were pushed to be voted on at a later date. The rules that were passed: Expanding the playoff OT rules to the regular season, all turnovers to be reviewed without having a coach challenge, illegally kicking a loose ball is now a loss of downs, too many men on the field is a dead ball foul, a person that receives a crack back block has now become a defenseless player which turns into a 15-yard penalty. Rules that were pushed to a later date: pushing trade deadline from week 6 to week 8, expanding preseason roster to 90 players, a player that is injured on or before week 2 can be put on the IR and still return during the season. Rules that were not passed: have the booth review videos rather than referees on field, banning the horse-collar tackle on the QB.
My thoughts on these rules. I completely agree with the overtime rule. We can all agree that it is significantly harder to stop a team on defense than it is to score. There are quite a few offenses that just have explosive offenses. If you are able to hold an offense to a field goal then you definitely should be rewarded with a chance to match on offense. This is the best decision they made of the day.
This one might surprise you. I do NOT agree with the rule that all turnovers are now to be reviewed automatically. Why? This completely takes the human element away from the game. A rule that would make more sense is that you get one challenge per half and if you win you get another, and another, and another, etc.. What is there left to challenge? The spot of the ball? This will raise the percentage of challenges won even more than last year. I have always thought that the human element was a part of the game. Something that should stay in the game. It is slowly being less and less a part of the game. I also think this only slows the game down even more. When a defense recovers a fumble, this really fires the team up. The offense wants to get in their while they have momentum and convert the turnover. Turnovers really silence a team while on the road and to go out there with a silent crowd on the road, only one thing could be better, and that is scoring to really shut them up. If it were a controversial turnover, and it takes five minutes to figure out what actually happened, the fire that was under the team isn't quite as big if they are having to wait five minutes to go out and try and score. Many people have argued that this had a lot to do with making the game longer and being able to have more commercials during games. It may have been part of the decision but I really think they were just trying to make the game better and I just don't agree. Then again, I know a lot of people won't agree with me on that one.
A person that receives a crack back is now considered defenseless and the person laying the hit will probably be receiving a fine plus there will also be a 15-yard penalty. I do understand that the NFL is trying to make the game safer but seriously? These are the most exciting hits there are! When a player just gets absolutely leveled because he didn't pay attention to where he was on the field. Remember when Kurt Warner got leveled in the playoffs? I love Kurt Warner and he is a hall of famer in my mind, but that was absolutely hilarious! What about when Hines Ward DESTROYED Ed Reed? These are in know way dirty. These are called making a play for your team. Also, how are the refs going to differentiate a big block as apposed to a crack back block? This is also going to really damper down the punt return game. I completely disagree with this rule as it is one of the worst rule changes they have made in recent years.
By far the most surprising move the NFL made but also, in my opinion, the best decision they made. The NFL denying the rule of making it a penalty to make a horse collar tackle on the QB. There are so many instances as to where this is the only type of tackle a defensive player can make on the QB. I was very surprised they didn't make this a penalty just because of the way the NFL is moving in trying to make it a safer league.
As for the rule changes that were pushed to a later date, I think they are not nearly as big of an impact as the ones that are made today. We will see how the outcome in the near future.

Why The Colts Should Draft Luck Over RG3

Just 2 weeks ago, any average NFL fan could tell you that Andrew Luck would be the number 1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. This is all starting to change after both players had their pro day in the past week. It is not that Luck hurt is stock in any way at all, it is that RG3 had a better than expected pro day. Scouts were very impressed with how RG3 preformed at Baylor's pro day. I am in no way saying that Luck had a bad pro day at all, he lived up to the expectations. After both players held there pro day there is more speculation that there could be a surprise with the first pick and the Colts go with RG3. BAD IDEA. The common argument I hear on why RG3 is better than Luck is that RG3 has dual threat ability. I have always been quite skeptical on a team making a dual threat Quarterback there franchise Quarterback. When a team makes a player there franchise Quarterback it means they are investing in that player for years to come and they want that player to bring them success. Is success in the NFL making it to the playoffs year after year, or is success bringing home Lombardi trophies? I would have to say Lombardi trophies. When we talk about dual threat Quarterbacks that have won Lombardi trophies there is arguably only 1, maybe not even 1. John Elway is the only player that could be argued as a dual threat Super Bowl winning Quarterback. I honestly do not even view Elway as much of a dual threat Quarterback. In his best season as far as rushing, he tallied 304 yards, and 4 TD. The 304 yards was the most in a season for his career and the 4 TD would be the second most he would rush for in a season(Rushed for 6 in 1991). That being said, there has never been a true dual threat Quarterback in the NFL that has proven success by winning Super Bowl trophies. That being the case, I do not see why the Colts would select RG3 with the first overall pick instead of taking Andrew Luck who is one of the most hyped prospects in NFL history. He has all the skills an intangibles to be the next great Quarterback in the NFL.
This year the Indianaoplis Colts will make Andrew Luck the number 1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft and it will be the right choice. Andrew Luck is NFL ready and in my opinion there is very very low risk in drafting him. He is the best in the draft, and he is the safest in the draft.

Adding a new writer to the scene

At the very beginning I promised 4-5 posts a week about football. During the off season this is very hard to do. The biggest problem is there is only one of me to talk about the different things going on. There are times where there isn't much to talk about at all. Also, with being in high school and going to college next year, it will be increasingly harder to find time to write about the various stories of the NFL. This being said, I have decided to bring a good friend of mine on board. His name is Andy Mullet, he is also senior in high school, and will be going off to college next year. He is very knowledgeable about sports as well as I am (or at least I hope that is what you all think). I think having this addition will also add different view points. There may be times where we may write about the same story but may have to different viewpoints. This will not turn into a debate blog where we go back and forth about or viewpoints, just sharing both of them. There will probably be times where you will agree with him on a story and then me on a next. Connecting with the readers of this blog is what I strive for. I hope to bring you all the best analysis possible as well as give useful information. I don't want to give a bunch of useless info about how well the Kardashians are doing. If there are any suggestions, criticisms, or concerns, please do not hesitate to share them with us. You can always contact Andy and I. Here is our contact info:

Tebow Press Conference

I was finally able to get around to watch the Tebow press conference. Basically I wanted to stab myself throughout the entire thing. He was definitely very excited about being a Jet. He said how excited he was about 50 times. It was by far one of the most boring press conferences I have ever seen. There was little humor in it and it was about 30 minutes long. Tebow is definitely a class act though. He was very good about dodging questions as well as giving great answers to the others. A lot of the questions that were asked were relatively the same. The reporters reminded me of the students in my high school classes and how every has to ask the same question. There were three types of questions: Why he chose NYJ, his religious beliefs, and the pressure he will be putting on the team and specifically Mark Sanchez because of how big a figure Tebow is. Also, he talked about how he really did have a say in the matter of where he went. He said he chose the Jets because he knew the organization as a whole. He played for Tony Sparano in the Senior bowl and he said that he met other coaches and players at other sporting events in the past two years of being in the NFL. My favorite answer Tebow gave was when a reporter asked why Tebow doesn't give much insight about his religious beliefs. Tebow responded by basically saying that the press conference is about the New York Jets and it isn't the time and place for religion. It was one of the biggest things that showed me he really understands the game of football and when it's time for football, it's time for football and nothing else.
While I do bash Tebow very often, I do think he is a great person, a great football player, just not a great quarterback. I just feel like he is playing the wrong position. I will mention that Tebow also said he wants to play QB as a Jet and not other positions. Tebow said he believes he was meant to play QB and not running back or tight end. Maybe he wants to play FB because he never ruled that out? Haha just kidding, I highly doubt that. It is by far one of the more boring positions to play yet a very crucial position. Leave your comments below on what you think about the whole Tebow situation.

More Tebow

After hearing all different point of views from different sports analysts and speculating the trade myself, here are my thoughts on the Tebow trade.
First off, I do think part of this was a publicity stunt by Rex. Why do I say that? We have all heard loud and clear what the Jets are about. They are constantly trying to steal the headlines in NYC and they sure as hell did it here. I don't think that all this was just a publicity stunt, but it sure did have something to do with it.
Rex really thinking Tebow can take the starting job? Well of course! Would you pay someone first round money to just run wildcat formations? Never! Rex brought him to NY because he knows Tebow is a better leader and probably thinks he is a better QB, I don't think Tebow is better than Ryan Leaf to be honesty, than Sanchez. We have all seen flashes of greatness from Sanchez, but we have also seen the lowest of lows from him. Sanchez just doesn't belong in New York, but then again, neither does Tebow. Ultimately Tebow will get the starting job from Sanchez no later than week 10, not because Tebow will earn it, but Rex, the Jets receivers, and the Jets fans will get tired of Sanchez at QB and Tebow will be given the starting job. By week 12 I am sure everyone will realize that not only was it a bad move to put Tebow at QB, but to even bring him on the team.
Rex trying to stay of the hot seat? Possibly. We all know what kind of mouth Rex and co. has on them. He has promised a Superbowl ever since he has been there. What does he have to show for it? He has 2 AFC Championship losses. It also seems as if he is losing the locker room. I also don't think it helps when Antonio Cromartie said what he said about Tebow. If you have not read it here it is, "We don't need Tebow. We sell out every home game let him go to Jacksonville Tampa or Miami." Then also went on to say, "Y bring Tebow in when we need to bring in more weapons for @Mark_Sanchez let's build the team around him." I honestly agree with his points but you can't run your mouth like that. Especially when the trade did clear and now he had to release a new statement to cover his butt. The statement he said basically sounded like an "Oh sh-t, this isn't good." Here is what he said, "He's a guy that brings a different atmosphere to the locker room and the huddle. We were missing that last year — a guy that can take control and do the things that we need to." Order definitely needs to be restored in the Jets organization and Tebow might be the answer to that.
It could be a possibility that Rex just wants to keep his job but I honestly think Rex believes Tebow is the answer to a Superbowl for that organization. I think Ryan believes that with Tebow's leadership he can fire up that team and show them real leadership, which is something that team desperately needs.
Ultimately here is what is going to happen. Tebow is slowly going to get playing time and eventually take the starting job. This will cause a lot of problems in the locker room that is above Tebow. Tebow will lose the first playoff game, if they get there. This is only a giant step backwards for that team. You know that old saying, "Two quarterbacks is the same thing as zero." We see it in college football all the time. Either one QB gets more and more time or they keep two QBs and they end up doing worse.
After all that, I do wish the Jests, not Tebow, best of luck this coming season as they are a team I like to see win. Also, I do respect Rex greatly and I love his defensive mentality, but I just think this all was a bad move.

Saints and Tebow

Today only made what was already a crazy off-season even crazier! To start the day Tim Tebow was traded to the Jets! Then we learned about 10 minutes later it might not go through. It seems as if it is the Broncos who are holding up this trade. The problem is that the Broncos paid Tebow $5 million before the money was actually due and the Broncos want the money back. Because of this snag in the deal, the Jaguars have now re-entered themselves into the contract. So essentially, before we wake up tomorrow, Tebow will have a new home in either New York or Jacksonville. I really don't even see what Tebow can bring to the table in New York. Literally I see nothing except to put him in as a package player. The only thing I see is the Jags get impatient with Blaine and stick Tebow in there to try and do something.  Tebow is the most OVERRATED player in the NFL... EVER. No question about it. All he has is a work ethic. No skill.
Now to the Saints story. By far the biggest penalty ever handed to one single team. Sean Payton is suspended for the entire season, GM Mickey Loomis was suspended for 8 regular season games, and Gregg Williams was suspended indefinitely. This is worse than the Art Schlichter suspension for gambling. I have said this before and I will say this again, the bounty program is in ever football team down to high school football. Yes the broke the rules, and yes they lied to Goodell but really? All of these suspensions plus this years 2nd round pick as well as next years pick. Not to mention, the organization was also fined $500k. That is by far the most ridiculous chain of penalties I have ever seen, and probably will ever see. I want to hear what y'all have to think about it so please leave your comments below about this situation and the Tebow situation.
Also, Ronde Barber has decided to come back for his 16th season and Hines Ward retired yesterday. I really hope Ronde has one hell of a season this year as he is one of the most widely respected players in the league. I also thought it was really sad news to hear the Hines is retiring. Given the situation, it was the right move. I just think he had a lot more left in the tank and the circumstances just didn't play themselves right.

Peyton Manning and more

It became official today. Peyton Manning signed with the Broncos. I would rather see him in a Titans uniform than a Broncos uniform but I guess they just gave him a better deal. In all honesty though, I think Elway wanted Peyton because that was his only way to get rid of Tebow. If he would've gotten rid of him any other way, the fans of Denver would not be happy at all. I am saying this because the Broncos organization said if Peyton were to sign in Denver, Tebow will be traded. I am not really sure where Tebow would actually fit though. The Seahawks were able to sign Matt Flynn. Jake locker definitely deserves some more play time, and Gabbert also deserves one more shot with the Jags. I think the only plausible places would be in Cleveland or Miami.
This helps Alex Smith tremendously with his contract situation as well. While I don't believe he deserves any sort of raise for what he did last year, this gives him leverage because who else would they sign? Flynn and Manning are both off of the board now. The 49ers season was all defense. They were setting defensive records all season and Alex Smith had no part in any offensive records. As a matter a fact, David Akers set the field goals in a season record because Alex didn't know how to get the ball in the end zone once he got inside the 20.
Back to Tebow. If Tebow goes to Miami or Cleveland, does anyone really expect him to be able to put up good numbers? The Browns just got rid of Payton Hillis, and the Dolphins got rid of Brandon Marshall. What kind of weapons would he be able to use in the 4th quarter? He will get signed by someone just because of his work ethic. Someone will take a shot at him and then realize how stupid they were for doing so. To Elway and Co. this is a complete win-win situation. He got rid of Tebow and signed a real QB.

It is just going to be a repeat of Tebow crying...

Super Mario signs with The Bills!

Mario Williams finally decided were he wanted to go. He signed with the Bills. He was just added to the list of players with enormous contracts. His deal is reportedly $100 million over 6 years with 50 million guaranteed. I think this will help the Bills enormously. There biggest downfall last year other than injuries was there defense. Mario will definitely be a big help. Just remember, nobody circles the wagon like the Bills.
Steve Hutchinson was signed by the Titans. I think this is going to help the Titans greatly in their quest for Manning. A 7-time pro bowl guard who really knows how to get it done in the trenches. The only problem is that he is aging.
Peyton Manning has been offered a contract for life. I think this was a big move as nobody has reportedly offered him a contract. How official this contract was, I have no idea. The Titans organization said that this contract was inferring that they want him to be there and help out that organization even after he retires. The Titans just keep becoming more and more like the place he will go. Now what happens for Jake Locker if he signs? It seems as if the Titans don't even know what to do with him if Peyton signs. The Titans have openly said they don't know what to do with Locker if Manning were to sign. In my opinion, this will really be good for Jake. It definitely will be ten times better than if he were to sign in Denver and have Tebow sit behind him. If the Titans decide to keep Jake, which I highly think they will, he will appreciate the fact he that he will be able to learn from a future Hall of Famer.I sure would appreciate that. Heck, I would even do it for free! Every Denver fan is making the argument that they are better than the Titans, which I believe is true, but I think the Titans have the better pitch. Went to college in Tennessee, first to make a real deal, more offensive weapons, plus the Titans are making an attempt to make their o-line better. I am really disappointed that he isn't going to go to Arizona, but I see the Titans as his new team.
Payton Hillis going to the Chiefs? Now I find this as a surprise but I guess it makes sense. Even going to the Chiefs, it is an upgrade in terms of talent level on the team. The Chiefs are also a hardcore run team, although who wouldn't when your QB is Matt Castle? I just don't see why you would wand Jamaal and Payton on the same team. Two of the premiere backs in the league. I just think one of them will be wasting their talents because they are going to split so much time. I guess we will just have to see what happens next year.

3/13-3/14 Football News

Hey everyone! I hope you liked my post about Peyton. Today's post will be on last nights moves and todays.
The Bucs are one of those teams I like to see win and I think the Bucs have been the biggest standouts so far. Making some great additions in Vincent Jackson, Eric Wright, and Carl Nicks. Vincent will definitely help that offense out with the short list of good WRs on that roster. 2-time pro bowler Carl Nicks really helps a line that was just abysmal last season. Eric Wright also helps that secondary that really only consists of an aging Ronde Barber. This will really help a team who is trying to rebuild and bounce back from last years not so great season.
The Rams are in the same boat as the Bucs. They each had breakout seasons two years ago, but then last year, went completely backwards. They were able to sign Cortland yesterday, which I found surprising. There was talk he would go where Vincent went but I guess that fell through.
The Chargers were able to fill the void of missing Jackson and adding Robert Meachem. I think Meachem can easily be a top WR in the league if he is given the shot and I think he will have no problem at all doing just that with the Chargers.
Randy Moss to the 49ers. I thought this was an interesting move. To the 49ers, it is a situation where all the 49ers can do from this situation is win. It is a cheap 1 year deal for someone who can stretch the field well. Moss is definitely going to help the run game because with him on the field, you can't cheat on the run game. He can still run a 4.3 at 35 years old which is just ridiculous. Randy says that he is focused and ready to go this year but can we really trust him? He has been known to give up on teams who aren't winning. Was last season just a one hit wonder type of season or was it the real deal. Alex Smith is still the QB there. I just feel like this just won't work. I think Randy would have benefited the most from the Saints because of the offense. Maybe this will work out, maybe not, we will just have to wait and see.
The Redskins are out to spend money again and this time they did it with Garcon. They are presumably going to draft RG3, and adding Garcon will definitely be a nice weapon for RG3 to have. I don't see the Redskins doing well and that is because of the poor job of Mike Shanahan. He doesn't know how to speak to the media, let alone run a football team.
We all heard about the Brandon Marshall trade that sent him to the Bears for practically nothing. Now we hear today that he is in trouble with the law, again. Apparently he punched a woman in the eye, at the wee hours of the night in a club. The Bears are more than likely going to get to the bottom of this and if they find out the Dolphins knew about this, the trade will get reversed. When Brandon does get suspended it will definitely be at least 4 games. I see an 8 game suspension coming down on him. This isn't looking like a good off-season for the Dolphins.
The Cowboys were able to go out and sign a new CB to fill Newman's place on the roster. They went out and got Brandon Carr. This is a great sign for the Cowboys. I don't think this is something that will make the Cowboys Super Bowl contenders though.
Some big re-signings and extensions as well. Trent Cole, DeSean Jackson, Calvin Johnson, Carlos Rogers and Reggie Wayne. As an Eagles fan, it was nice to see Trent and Jackson get resigned. Calvin got a massive contract which I will talk more about shortly. Reggie decided to stay with the Colts, which I question, and Carlos resigned with the 49ers
Calvin Johnson's contract extension was massive. So massive that I think it might even cripple the Lions. The contract is a 7 year, $132 million. I believe that it is $60 million guaranteed. It is a great signing in that they are now able to keep Calvin for another 7 year contract and where able to keep him in Detroit and get this deal done early. With so much money being guaranteed, how are they going to improve that secondary that just absolutely sucks, and isn't getting better with them losing Eric Wright. I hope they find a way to help themselves out, but it will definitely be hard.
Peyton Update: I have heard today that Peyton has rule out the Cardinals and it is now between the Broncos and Titans. Not very sure how true this is but that is all I have heard today and figured you all might want to hear it.
Mario Williams has been everywhere the past few days. He is in Buffalo today but he has been everywhere. Not really sure where he is going to go. I just hope that he goes to somewhere he can actually make a difference and doesn't sign just for the money.
That's what I have for today. See you all again tomorrow unless some big news happens such as a Peyton or Mario deal.

My first post about sports. I'm excited!

Peyton Manning- From the start I said he is going to go to Arizona. Other than that o-line, which could be a problem because I am sure he fears for his health, it's the perfect fit. They have a great run game, which could help that already tremendous PA he has. He has Larry Fitz, and for all the other receivers on the roster, Peyton can make them better because that's what he does. I feel like all they need is a QB to actually go somewhere.
Everyone kept talking about how the Dolphins were a great fit because of their offensive weapons. Well today that traded away the best WR on that team, Brandon Marshall. Denver? I find it hard to believe he would go there, even with all of this talk that he might. The Broncos just used a first round pick in 2010 to draft Tebow.
I am not a Tebow supporter but I will make a case for him. He might not be a great QB and many won't even consider him a good QB, BUT he just made a miraculous turnaround for a team that just seemed down and out. He came in a really put fire under them and pumped up the locker room. I give most credit to that defense for winning those games, but the fact of the matter is that he was able to pump up the locker room and get them to the playoffs. If Peyton were to go there, they would either have to trade/release Tebow, or have him sit behind Peyton. If he sits behind Peyton, what will he learn? They are literally the complete opposites of each other. One runs and puts his shoulder down(Tebow) and the other tries waddling down field and falls when someone comes(Peyton). Also, Tebow's rookie contract will be up and it will be time to make a new contract and someone that just sat for 3-4 years isn't going to get much of a deal at all. unless he is doing something with Elway under the table.
Back to the releasing/trading Tebow. Really? Who would trade for him. The only team without a young QB, who is in dire need of one, is Seattle. I would rather draft someone than take my chances on Tebow. The only other team that has even been related to picking Tebow up is Jacksonville.
I think Blaine deserves at least on more year to get a fair evaluation. The lockout was hard on everyone, but in particular, rookies, especially QBs. Yes, there was Cam Newton who threw the ball better than anyone thought he would, but all rookie Qbs definitely deserve one more shot. All in all, Peyton is going to go to Arizona and there are going to be some bitter quarterbacks: Tebow, Kolb, Sanchez, Locker, and I'm sure many more by the time this is all over with.
